My routine worked—
until life changed.

A manageable restart, without rebuilding your whole day.

Bringing Minds Into Sync

A real-life situation · Illustrative example

New work hours. The old routine no longer fits.

You used to leave with your lunch and keys ready. Your shifts change. Now you rush out, forget your lunch and feel behind before the day begins.

The routine may need to fit a different day.

Restart one useful part

You do not have to rebuild the whole routine at once.

Choose one action

Pick something that would make tomorrow easier: putting your keys in one agreed place.

Link it to something familiar

After putting down your evening cup, place your keys in that spot.

Try it, then adjust

Notice whether it helps. If the timing or place does not fit, change one part.

Missed a day? Restart at the next useful opportunity. You do not need to wait for Monday.

A smaller version for a hard day

Instead of preparing everything for tomorrow, choose one useful thing.

For example: put your bag by the door. Keep it clear of walkways.

Words you can use

“My old routine is not fitting this week. I am trying a smaller version. Could we agree where the keys go?”

A disrupted routine does not prove ADHD

People with ADHD may find organising time and remembering steps difficult. Changes in sleep, caring responsibilities, health or workload can make routines harder for anyone.

If this keeps affecting sleep, eating, work or wellbeing, discuss the pattern with your GP or clinician. They can consider your circumstances and other possible causes.

If this did not help

Was the reminder out of sight? Did the routine depend on a quiet evening you rarely have? Change one part or ask for practical help. The aim is a routine that fits your life, not a perfect record.

Keep essential care in place. Do not change prescribed medication or health monitoring to simplify a routine. Ask your clinician if the plan is difficult to follow.

Make room for wellbeing

Rest, meals and something you enjoy can belong in a routine too. Choose what helps your day, rather than filling every gap with chores.
